Welcome to Salted Rim

Nestled in the rolling countryside, Salted Rim Corgis is a small, family-run breeding program with over a decade of dedication to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We raise every litter inside our home โ€” socialized with children, cats, and the full warmth of daily family life. We believe the best start in life comes from love, not a kennel. Our corgis are health-tested, temperament-evaluated, and genuinely spoiled before they ever meet you.

Why Everyone Falls for the Pembroke

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the world's most beloved herding breeds โ€” bold, bright, and bursting with personality in a surprisingly compact package.

Size & Build

Corgis typically weigh 22โ€“31 lbs and stand 10โ€“12 inches tall. Their long body and short legs are their trademark โ€” built low to the ground for agile herding.

Intelligence

Ranked among the top 15 most intelligent dog breeds, Corgis are quick learners who thrive on mental stimulation. They love a challenge โ€” and will outsmart you if you're not careful!

Temperament

Loyal, playful, and surprisingly bold for their size. Corgis are affectionate with family, friendly with strangers, and gentle with children when properly socialized.

Energy Level

Moderately active โ€” they love a good run or hike but are equally happy snuggling on the couch. Two 30-minute walks a day keeps a Corgi happy and healthy.

Coat & Colors

The classic double coat comes in red, sable, fawn, black & tan, and tri-color, always with white markings. They shed seasonally โ€” a good brush twice a week works wonders.

Lifespan

With proper care, Pembroke Welsh Corgis typically live 12โ€“15 years, making them a long, wonderful commitment full of adventures and belly rubs.

Caring for Your Corgi

Everything you need to give your new best friend a happy, healthy life โ€” from puppyhood through their golden years.

๐Ÿ— Quality Kibble First

Choose a high-protein, breed-appropriate kibble as the foundation. Look for real meat (chicken, beef, or salmon) as the first ingredient.

๐Ÿ“ Portion Control

Adult Corgis do best with ยพโ€“1 cup of dry food twice daily. Avoid free-feeding โ€” this breed loves food and obesity stresses their long spine.

๐Ÿฅฆ Healthy Treats

Carrots, blueberries, and plain cooked chicken make excellent low-calorie treats for training. Avoid grapes, raisins, onions, and xylitol.

๐Ÿ’ง Fresh Water Always

Keep clean water available at all times, especially after exercise. Stainless steel bowls are easiest to keep bacteria-free.

๐Ÿถ Puppy-Specific Needs

Puppies need 3โ€“4 small meals a day until 6 months, then transition to twice daily. Use puppy-formulated food for the first year.

๐Ÿšซ Foods to Avoid

Never feed chocolate, macadamia nuts, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, or anything with xylitol โ€” all are toxic to dogs.

๐Ÿฆถ Daily Walks

Two 30-minute walks per day is the sweet spot for adult Corgis โ€” enough to burn energy without overworking their joints.

๐ŸŽพ Playtime Counts

Fetch, tug-of-war, and interactive toys all contribute to their daily exercise. Mental stimulation counts as much as physical activity.

๐Ÿง— Stairs & Jumping

Limit repetitive jumping and use ramps for furniture access. Their long spine is vulnerable to disc disease if stressed repeatedly.

๐Ÿ• Herding Instinct

Corgis love having a job. Try agility, rally obedience, or even herding trials โ€” activities that tap their natural drive keep them fulfilled.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Weather Awareness

Avoid pavement walks on hot days โ€” their belly is close to the ground. In winter, dry their paws after walks and watch for salt irritation.

๐Ÿพ Puppy Exercise Limits

For puppies under 1 year: 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day. Over-exercising puppies can damage developing joints.

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Regular Brushing

Brush 2โ€“3 times per week with a slicker brush and undercoat rake. During spring and fall shedding season, daily brushing prevents tumbleweeds.

๐Ÿ› Bath Time

Bathe every 6โ€“8 weeks using a gentle dog shampoo. Bathing too frequently strips natural oils โ€” unless they've found something delightful to roll in.

โœ‚๏ธ Nail Trims

Trim nails every 3โ€“4 weeks. Long nails cause discomfort and affect their gait. Start handling paws early so they tolerate it happily.

๐Ÿ‘‚ Ear Cleaning

Check ears weekly for redness or odor. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner to gently wipe โ€” never insert anything into the ear canal.

๐Ÿฆท Dental Care

Brush teeth 2โ€“3 times per week with dog-safe toothpaste. Dental chews and water additives help too โ€” dental disease is very common in dogs.

โœ‚๏ธ Professional Grooming

A professional groom every 8โ€“12 weeks keeps everything tidy. Note: never shave a Corgi's double coat โ€” it protects them from both heat and cold.

๐Ÿฉบ Vet Check-ups

Annual wellness exams are essential. Puppies need several vet visits in their first year for vaccines, deworming, and early health screenings.

๐Ÿ’‰ Core Vaccines

Distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and rabies are non-negotiable. Your vet may also recommend bordetella and leptospirosis based on lifestyle.

๐Ÿฆด Spine Health

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a known risk in Corgis. Maintain healthy weight, use ramps, and limit jumping to protect their back.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Eye & Hip Screening

Reputable breeders test for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and hip dysplasia. Ask for health clearances from both parents before purchasing.

๐Ÿ› Parasite Prevention

Year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is strongly recommended. Talk to your vet about the best options for your region and lifestyle.

โœ‚๏ธ Spay & Neuter

Most vets recommend waiting until 12โ€“18 months before spaying or neutering Corgis to allow proper hormonal development and growth.

๐ŸŽ“ Start Early

Begin basic commands (sit, stay, come, leave it) at 8 weeks. Corgis are eager learners โ€” early training shapes a well-mannered adult dog.

โœจ Positive Reinforcement

Reward-based training works best. Use small, high-value treats and enthusiastic praise. Corgis respond poorly to harsh corrections โ€” they'll dig their heels in!

๐Ÿ  Crate Training

A crate is a safe den, not a punishment. Introduce it gradually with treats and meals inside. Most Corgis learn to love their crate as a cozy retreat.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Socialization

Expose puppies to new people, dogs, sounds, and environments between 8โ€“16 weeks. Well-socialized Corgis are confident and friendly throughout life.

๐Ÿพ Leash Manners

Teach loose-leash walking early. Corgis can pull! A front-clip harness helps redirect their attention without putting pressure on their throat.

๐Ÿ“š Keep It Fun

Short sessions (5โ€“10 minutes) work best. End on a success and always leave them wanting more. Bored Corgis will find their own entertainment โ€” usually at your expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything prospective families ask us most.

Fill out our inquiry form below and we'll reach out to chat! We like to get to know families a little before placing puppies. Our waitlist typically runs 3โ€“6 months depending on available litters.

All of our breeding dogs are tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), von Willebrand's Disease (vWD), Degenerative myelopathy (DM), hip and elbow dysplasia, and cardiac health. We share all clearances openly with prospective families.

Absolutely โ€” when raised together! Our puppies are socialized with children and cats from birth. Corgis have a natural herding instinct and may occasionally nip at running heels, but this is easily redirected with consistent training from an early age.

Our puppies are placed as pet companions (with spay/neuter agreement) and as show/breeding prospects at different price points. Contact us for current pricing โ€” we're happy to walk you through what's included (health guarantees, microchip, first vet visit, puppy starter kit, and lifetime breeder support).

Honestly? Yes, a fair amount! Corgis have a dense double coat and shed moderately year-round with heavier "blow outs" in spring and fall. Regular brushing (2โ€“3x/week) and a good vacuum are your best friends. Many Corgi owners say it's entirely worth it.

Always! We consider every puppy family part of the Salted Rim extended family. We're available for questions big and small throughout your dog's life โ€” and we love getting puppy update photos. We also have an owners' community you're welcome to join.
